TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE
Scottoilers are extraordinarily reliable, and you can look forward to years of trouble-free use. Problems can usually be broken down into the following main headings:
TIP: Like most things mechanical, problems invariably are caused by something simple, although it's human nature to look for a more complex cause. Thoroughly check out those simple ones first. For example it usually isn't the RMV!

DIFFICULTY IN PRIMING THE SYSTEM
  1. Ensure that the adjuster knob is turned fully clockwise to "PRIME" setting.

  2. Ensure the delivery pipe hasn't become crushed/kinked at any point, ie. at cable ties; tool kit; seat.

  3. Check that the black injector at the sprocket hasn't become blocked - clear with needle.

THE DELIVERY TUBE IS DRAINING WHEN BIKE IS STANDING
  1. FULL LENGTH DRAINS: Check the delivery tube for loose connection at bottom of RMV - remake connection.

  2. PARTIAL DRAIN/AIR BUBBLES: Check at start of draining point for small hole/split in tube - fit mushroomed connector (part 3b) at break point.
THE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO DELIVER OIL WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF
  1. Check breather for blockage. This can create a vacuum within the RMV that will hold the valve open. To check - disconnect the breather and run system. Attempt to clear breather by blowing slowly through, or contact Scottoilers for replacement breather (part 9). NB - do not run the system without the breather for any length of time, as the oil can become contaminated with dirt.

  2. The internal 'O' ring has become contaminated with dirt and is not re-seating - attempt to clear by pumping bottle repeatedly when re-priming the system. This may dislodge dirt on the 'O' ring.

  3. The internal spring has become weakened. Contact Scottoilers, quoting warranty reference and the code etched on RMV under the filler plug.

THE SYSTEM WILL NOT DELIVER OIL
  1. Check Delivery Pipe:
    a. Check for any air bubbles in clear delivery tube - re-prime to clear.
    b. Ensure pipe hasn't become crushed at any point, ie. at cables ties; tool kit; seat.
    c. Check for any air bubbles in clear delivery tube - re-prime to clear.

  2. Check Vacuum Connection:
    Turn the adjuster knob to "Prime" and switch engine on - If valve in oiler lifts, the vacuum connection is OK. If the valve does not lift:
    a. Check the black nylon pipe and damper elbow for breaks/splits, which could cause loss of vacuum.
    b. If initial installation - check that oiler is connected to a vacuum line by removing pipe, switching engine on and checking with finger for suction.

  3. Check Breather - Remove from side of RMV, switch engine on and attempt to run system. If it delivers oil without breather, the breather is blocked.
    a. Attempt to clear by blowing slowly through, or contact Scottoiler for replacement (part 9).

  4. Check for Blockage at Syphon - Disconnect the delivery tube from RMV. The pipe should drain completely. If it doesn't, there could be a blockage in the RMV at the syphon.
    a. Attempt to clear by pumping bottle repeatedly when re-priming the system. This may dislodge any dirt on the needle seat.
THE SYSTEM DELIVERS EXCESS OIL
  1. Turn the adjuster knob fully anti-clockwise to minimum. The system should not deliver more than 2 drops per minute at this setting.

  2. If it does deliver more than 2 drops - contact Scottoilers with your warranty reference and the code etched on RMV under the filler plug.

OIL IS FLOWING BACK UP DELIVERY TUBE WHEN ENGINE IS STARTED
  1. There is a fault, i.e. a split, in the internal diaphragm. Please contact Scottoilers, quoting your warranty reference and the code etched on the RMV under the filler plug.

  2. This can also happen if the RMV has been opened and reassembled incorrectly - i.e. missing the closing spring, or not re-fitting the diaphragm onto the locating groove on the oiler top.

THE RMV IS EMPTYING WITHOUT SYPHONING OIL FROM THE HCR
  1. Check that the black breather plug on the swivel-out HCR filler has a clear central hole - this is the system breather.

  2. Check that the filler plug is flat and secure on RMV and that the nylon luer at the top of the plug is connected properly.

  3. With the engine off, prime the pipe between the HCR and RMV by -
    1. Disconnect nylon luers at top of RMV filler plug;
    2. Swivel out HCR filler, removing the breather plug;
    3. Remove clear tube from black spout cap of Scottoil bottle;
    4. Fit black spout cap into HCR filler tube;
    5. Pump bottle until oil fills the tube running between the HCR and the RMV;
    6. Quickly reconnect luers into RMV filler plug.
Always re-prime this tube after any removal of filler plug/luer connection. NB: When the engine is switched off the oil will always travel part of the way down the tube, back into the HCR. However, the tube should always refill within 30 seconds of the engine restarting.

If the pipe repeatedly empties completely back into the HCR and doesn't refill on restarting the engine - there must be an air leak at the RMV. Please contact Scottoilers, quoting your warranty reference and the code etched on the RMV under the filler plug.

SPARE PARTS & REPAIRS
We do keep stocks of spare parts for the Oilers at our warehouse. However to the very fine tolerances required in assembly we do not service the RMV's here.

VACUUM CONNECTIONS
Below we list some of the most popular fittings. If we do not list your bike, it doesn't mean it doesn't fit! Almost all bikes have either a vacuum petcock you can 'T' into (included in the kit), or carb balancing stubs. Others like Ducati's and Yamahas have a screw in the inlet manifold - a brass adapter is included in the fitting kit.

SERVICE TIPS WHEN OUT OF WARRANTY
Users may wish to dismantle their RMV, when it is out of warranty - possibly to thoroughly clean out contamination, dust etc, which causes irregular flow and poor shut-off. The top cap is a tight press fit, and needs to be CAREFULLY levered off with a sharp knife. On re-assembly, remember to warm the clear bowl in hot water first, otherwise it is likely to crack.
